Wimbledon Introduces Video Review System for the First Time.

The Championships court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing video review technology.

Replay systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the option to contest specific rulings from the official, following the system currently in operation at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move follows just a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review other decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and determined the player was guilty of interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
