In a notable move ahead of the upcoming general election, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the wake of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Address Youth Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.
The September revolt was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from years of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Details of the Fresh Electoral Partnership
According to the official agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the nation's older political leadership. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in forming the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Broader Political Consultations Underway
In a separate development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with several leading political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.
After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
