Right-leaning reactions to the partial disclosure of files related to the Epstein case have been mixed, with certain supporters of the former Trump administration highlighting the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and additional Democratic figures in images, while different voices lamented how heavy redactions cast Donald Trump and GOP members in a negative light.
Administration Justifies Censorship with Fervent Hyperbole
Justice Department representatives defended the redactions with fervent exaggerated language. “Never in U.S. the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been so open with the American people about such a delicate legal issue,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed letter outlining the redaction procedure.
Concerns Raised by Redactions
While the former president's name and likeness are visible in some of the documents, the extensive black blocks raise serious questions about the information may be concealed behind them. A number of Republicans immediately called for increased transparency.
“People are furious and walking away,” wrote Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the redactions violate the statute, and suggested that a subsequent Congress may move to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, this file dump grossly does not adhere to both the intent and the wording of the law,” he continued.
A Faction of Rightwing Figures Swing Behind the Release
But, some conservative pundits and Trump allies came out strongly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The release—from a DOJ run by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes scores of pages that are completely censored, and numerous of the individuals depicted in pictures have their faces obscured.
Yet a few are not, featuring high-profile figures like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, in particular, enabled some conservative voices to go on the attack.
“This is quite rich how the political left falsely claimed President Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” wrote conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a female that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 reason Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a girl in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Clinton Campaign Releases Response
Clinton has repeatedly said he knew of zero illegal actions by Epstein and has never been alleged to have participated in any misconduct. “The White House has not been concealing those files for an extended period only to dump them at the last minute on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“This is about shielding themselves from what comes next, or from information they will try and hide forever. So they can release as many grainy decades-old photos as they desire, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the statement concluded.
Overall Rightwing Comment Remains Subdued
Nonetheless, broader comment on the political right was comparatively muted after the disclosure, particularly when compared with the loud calls for transparency that preceded the congressional approval to enact a law mandating the documents' release.
Loomer, who recently accepted media access at the Defense Department, had been among the most vocal proponents for a full release. In February, she chastised the Justice Department broadly and Bondi in particular after a set of rightwing influencers were provided physical binders of files that contained no new data.
